How to get services in New York
Most long-term supports are paid for by Medicaid, often through a waiver program. Start with Medicaid, then get on the program that fits. Many programs have a waiting list, so apply early.
Start here New York Medicaid · New York State Department of Health; local Departments of Social Services (HRA in New York City)
Apply online (opens in a new tab) · Call (855) 355-5777 · People 65 and older or with a disability who need non-MAGI Medicaid usually apply at their local Department of Social Services (HRA in New York City).
New York is a 1634 state, so people who get SSI are usually enrolled in Medicaid based on the Social Security decision.
Adults with disabilities who do not get SSI can apply under the aged, blind and disabled rules at the local Department of Social Services, including a spend down option if income is above the limit.
For children: None (no TEFRA option; the Children's Waiver can cover children who need an institutional level of care).
If you work: Medicaid Buy-In for Working People with Disabilities (MBI-WPD): lets working people with disabilities earn more and keep Medicaid (details not re-read this run).
Steps
- If you get SSI, watch for your Medicaid card from New York
- If you are under 65 and do not need long-term care, apply through NY State of Health
- If you are 65 or older, blind, or have a disability, apply at your local Department of Social Services (HRA in New York City)
